Image files that employ JPG compression are commonly called "JPG files" and are stored in variants of the JIF image format. In 2013 it was updated to accommodate VP9 video and Opus audio. WebM initially supported VP8 video and Vorbis audio streams. The WebM container is based on a profile of Matroska. JPG typically achieves 10:1 compression with little perceptible loss in image quality. The degree of compression can be adjusted, allowing a selectable tradeoff between storage size and image quality. JPG is a commonly used method of lossy compression for digital images, particularly those produced by digital photography. Google sponsors the development of the format, and the corresponding software is distributed under a BSD license. It has a sister project, WebP, for images. It is primarily intended to offer a royalty-free alternative to use in the HTML5 video tag.
